Over the weekend, “Big E” — USS Enterprise (CVN 65) — celebrated the Navy’s 237th birthday in its own way. On-board fitness boss Amelia Chappell had sailors do 237 pushups and 237 curl-ups to mark the occasion, and the Enlisted Junior Sailor Organization hosted the annual tradition of cutting the Navy’s birthday cake. Every year, the oldest and youngest sailor cut the first piece of the cake together.
The celebration was bittersweet: As “Big E” wraps up its 25th and final deployment this year, it’s the last Navy birthday celebration the carrier will host.

Love “Big E” as much as we do? Sad to see her go?

Not to worry! At the inactivation ceremony for the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) last weekend, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus delivered some good news: the third Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier, CVN 80, will be named Enterprise! She is scheduled for completion in 2025.

“The work of the name Enterprise is not done. Rarely has our fleet been without a ship bearing the name Enterprise since the beginning of our Navy,” Mabus said before naming CVN 80.
